Two Generations of Roundup Contestants

The following was submitted to us by Mary Fay of Vermont:

The Vermont 4-H Horse Program has been sending delegates to the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup since it moved to KY and before that, they went to Harrisburg, PA. Vermont’s participation started there in 1976.

Sue Carp was one of our team members in the early to mid 80’s who was on the Vermont Quiz Bowl team who won the competition that year. Her daughter Jen is on our quiz bowl team this year, and has already competed in Judging and Hippology in KY.

A few years later, Kristin Weston (now Quimby) went to KY with a public speech. This year, her daughter Morgan will be competing in the Public Speaking competition.

And a little later than that (early 90’s, I think), Andrea Turner (now Scott) represented Vermont in a team demonstration. Her son Kyle will be presenting an individual demonstration this year.

Kristin Quimby is the coach for her daughter, and Andrea Scott is the coach for her son. Sue Carp is planning to fly to KY to watch the quiz bowl contest and attend the awards banquet, so in KY, all three former delegates and their offspring will be there.

All three former members and all three current members belong to the same club – Whispering Pines 4-H Club based in Jericho, VT. The leader, Mary Fay, has chaperoned the Vermont group since the first trip in 1976 and is still taking the group now. Mary coached all of the moms when they attended, and has helped each of the offspring in their quest to attend the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup.
